The online blogging community is massive, but there is always room for more.  It can be easy to start a blog and start typing away – but there are a whole host of options and things to consider when you first start out which might, at first, put you off.  Do not worry, here at Blog On we aim to make blogging easier for both beginners and advanced alike.  Every blogger started somewhere, so let’s give you some tips on where to begin.

Where to Start?
Read plenty of blogs, from different specialties.  Notice how each blog has its own voice and style. Take notes of things that you like from a number of different blogs to get an idea of how you would like your blog to look and sound.

Why do you want to blog?
Think about the reason you want to blog.  Blogging started as a “Web Log”, an online diary of events which many parenting bloggers still use their online space to do just that.  Other bloggers focus on niche areas which attract a set demographic of readers. Do you have a passion for cooking and baking, fashion and beauty, travel, interiors, technology, gaming, music, business, family or even sex? If you have a hobby or a passion for something, no matter how bizarre it may seem to others, you can blog about it.

Create your Presence
Most blogs are written under a pseudonym, the name says something about them as a person and their life.  Come up with and original name, not too close to someone else’s, and use this as your online presence.

Choose a Platform
There are many free blogging platforms out there.  Blogger, LiveJournal, WordPress, Weebly, Tumblr, TypePad, to name but a few.  Depending on what level of freedom you want from your blog will depend on what platform you choose.  There is also the option to go self-hosted, which at the beginning can seem scary, but gives bloggers much more freedom when it comes to monetising their online space.

Social Media
Using online social media is key to promoting yourself and blog online. The best advice available is when you have settled on your blog name, make sure that you use the same name across the board on all social media.  It can become confusing if your twitter name is unrelated to your blog, it makes it easier for your readers to follow you across multiple platforms and interact with you.

Now it is your turn to set those blogging wheels in motion.
